About the position

The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) is seeking a Research Scientist Associate I in the Department of Neuroscience, Developmental and Regenerative Biology. This full-time position is designed for entry-level professionals who will engage in scientific research assignments related to developmental disorders. The successful candidate will lead projects aimed at deciphering the molecular basis of these disorders, utilizing a variety of molecular and genetic techniques. Responsibilities include conducting experiments, analyzing data, and maintaining accurate records of research activities. The role also involves preparing technical reports, data summaries, and presentations for project meetings with the Principal Investigator (PI). In this position, the Research Scientist Associate I will be responsible for the evaluation, selection, and application of scientific techniques used in routine research. This includes performing experiments, gathering and analyzing data, and operating laboratory equipment. The candidate will also assist in screening and examining patients or subjects, and will be expected to train incoming and existing students on experimental procedures. Promoting safety and environmental protection in the laboratory is a critical aspect of this role, as is participating in training sessions and workshops. The position is grant-funded, with an expected duration of one year from the date of hire, subject to the availability of grant funds. The working environment is primarily laboratory-based, with exposure to various occupational hazards. The candidate must be able to work safely with chemical disinfectants and tolerate the conditions of a rodent facility. Physical demands include the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform repetitive motions. Responsibilities

  • Lead the project to decipher the molecular basis of a developmental disorder using molecular and genetic techniques.
  • Provide data summaries at project and individual meetings with the Principal Investigator (PI).
  • Maintain accurate records of research activities.
  • Assist in the preparation of technical reports, data summaries, manuscripts, and presentations.
  • Evaluate, select, and apply scientific techniques used in routine research.
  • Perform experiments, gather and analyze data and samples, and operate laboratory equipment.
  • Contribute to laboratory maintenance and perform calculations to complete research test results.
  • Collate data and perform statistical analysis of lab results.
  • Assist in screening and examining patients/subjects.
  • Train incoming and existing students on experimental procedures and assist with students' papers prior to submission.
  • Participate in training sessions and workshops.
  • Promote safety and environmental protection by reporting unsafe situations and following safety protocols.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in the field of assignment.
  • One (1) year of research experience in 'wet lab' research, including experience with standard laboratory techniques associated with cell culture and molecular biology.
  • Strong attention to detail in experiments and record-keeping skills.
  • Demonstrates good time management and organizational skills.
  • Strong communication skills for writing papers, reports, and giving presentations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Animal (mouse) model experience.
  • 'Dry lab' data analyses experience.
  • Experience with Python and/or R for data analyses; version control, and command line experience.

Benefits

  • Salary up to $34,000 annually, commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications.
  • Full-time position with up to 40 hours per week.
