About the position

The University of Houston is seeking a non-tenure track Research Scientist to support NASA's Human Research Program, specifically focusing on Central Nervous System (CNS) effects from spaceflight radiation exposure. This role involves managing research portfolios, collaborating with experts, and ensuring the relevance of research to spaceflight operations, with an emphasis on cognitive and behavioral health risks associated with space missions.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Space Radiation Element Scientists in preparing, implementing, and managing a program of CNS effects research.
  • Engage internal and external Subject Matter Experts to define research requirements and assess operational needs.
  • Provide Subject Matter Expertise in developing and maintaining evidence bases related to CNS effects and psychiatric disorders.
  • Facilitate research collaborations within the Space Radiation Element and across other HRP Elements.
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of investigations addressing space radiation-induced CNS decrements research gaps.
  • Support Element Managers in developing procurement plans for research tasks.
  • Assist in developing research solicitations for NASA Research Announcements and review grant proposals.
  • Complete reviews of investigators' Annual and Final Reports to assess research impacts and progress.
  • Represent the Space Radiation Element at workshops, educational initiatives, and review panels.
  • Provide scientific expertise for presentations, technical reports, and other documents.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. degree in Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Psychology, Physics, or related fields.
  • Demonstrated subject matter expertise in CNS effects from spaceflight radiation exposure and associated stressors.
  • Prior experience managing, coordinating, and directing NASA funded research projects.
