About the position

The Research Scientist position at the University of Massachusetts Lowell focuses on advancing coronagraph technologies for the PICTURE-D exoplanetary imaging balloon mission. The role involves collaboration with faculty, research staff, and students to conduct experimental research in wavefront control, optical metrology, and coronagraph testbed operation. This position is contingent upon funding availability and is a promotional opportunity for current UML employees within the same bargaining unit.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct experimental research for the PICTURE-D exoplanetary imaging balloon mission.
  • Collaborate with faculty, research staff, post-docs, graduate students, and undergraduate students.
  • Operate coronagraph testbeds and develop new coronagraph technologies for future space missions.
  • Engage in wavefront control and optical metrology research.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Physics, Astronomy, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of post-Ph.D. experience in developing space or balloon instrumentation.
  • Experience in coronagraph testbed research and/or exoplanetary astronomy.
  • Optical laboratory experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • High publication rate with 1-2 first author papers per year plus one conference proceeding.
  • Experience with optical propagation simulations and optical design software.
  • Familiarity with adaptive optics and wavefront sensing and control.

Benefits

  • Full-time position with a salary range of $72,000 - $78,000.
  • Benefited-Union position.
