About the position

The Research Scientist II at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab plays a pivotal role in executing pre-clinical scientific research strategies. This position involves investigating the feasibility of applying various scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products, and problems. The Research Scientist II is expected to demonstrate achievements in basic, clinical, or biomedical engineering research that enhance the reputation of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. This role contributes significantly to the overall direction of research at the institute, aligning with its mission to advance human ability through innovative scientific integration with clinical care. In this position, the Research Scientist II will assist in developing goals and objectives for their area of responsibility, ensuring the continued scientific growth and development of the research laboratory, unit, or center. They will also be involved in preparing research proposals and grant applications to secure external funding, ensuring that both scientific and budgetary milestones for specific projects are met. The role includes the expectation to begin publishing original studies in refereed journals that advance the clinical discipline or research field, as well as participating in scientific reviews for granting agencies. The Research Scientist II will demonstrate leadership by engaging in professional organizations and contributing to institutional leadership through committee service. They may also participate in the development of patent applications and are expected to perform all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. Responsibilities

  • Assists with the development of goals and objectives for area of responsibility to ensure continued scientific growth and development of research laboratory/unit/center.
  • Assists with preparing research proposals and grant applications to secure external research funding.
  • Ensures that scientific and budgetary milestones of specific projects are met.
  • Begins to publish original studies in refereed journals that advance the clinical discipline or research field.
  • Participates in scientific review for granting agencies.
  • Demonstrates leadership activity in professional organizations.
  • Contributes to institutional leadership by serving on relevant committees.
  • Develops productive collaborations with other established investigators.
  • May participate in development of patent applications.
  • Performs all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in a scientific discipline from an accredited school and successful completion of a postdoctoral fellowship.
  • Minimum 2 years of related experience with a high level of proficiency and knowledge in measurement and statistics.
  • Expert knowledge of scientific principles and concepts with a high level of analytical ability to design and conduct research projects.
  • Demonstrated success in technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others, and independent thought.
  • High level of proficiency in writing to prepare grant proposals, research reports, and other publications, and explain complex results to a lay audience.
  • Interpersonal skills needed to communicate effectively with other staff members and fellow researchers.
