About the position

The Research Scientist II position at Avecia is a pivotal role focused on supporting research and development projects, particularly in the area of oligonucleotides. This position requires a strong foundation in analytical chemistry and the ability to design and execute various testing protocols. The successful candidate will be responsible for meeting analytical testing requirements, which includes the development, qualification, verification, validation, and transfer of analytical methods. The role demands a high level of analytical skill to analyze and review project data, correct errors, and report results effectively to support ongoing research and development efforts. In addition to analytical testing, the Research Scientist II will provide essential analytical support to both Process Development and Manufacturing teams, contributing to the development of process controls. The role involves designing, reviewing, and performing method development experiments, as well as conducting GDP and technical project team reviews. The candidate will also be tasked with authoring technical documentation, such as development and validation reports, and providing technical and project leadership during analytical project meetings. A key aspect of this role is to improve laboratory compliance and contribute to a positive work atmosphere by assisting in mediating personnel conflicts within the team. The Research Scientist II will also be responsible for planning, tracking, and executing team tasks to ensure project results are delivered on time. Effective communication with clients and the ability to elevate issues to laboratory management are also critical components of this position. Overall, the Research Scientist II will play a significant role in contributing to the department's objectives for continuous improvement and technical excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Design and execute testing per method or protocol for development, qualification, verification, validation, and transfer of analytical methods.
  • Analyze and review project data, correct errors, and report results to support research and development primarily focused on oligonucleotides.
  • Provide analytical support to Process Development and Manufacturing and help develop process controls.
  • Design, review, and perform method development experiments.
  • Perform GDP and technical project team review.
  • Author technical documentation (e.g., development and validation reports).
  • Provide technical and project leadership in analytical project meetings.
  • Improve laboratory compliance.
  • Provide basic to intermediate-level training in lab techniques and procedures.
  • Plan, track and execute team tasks to deliver project results on time.
  • Exercise judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.
  • Communicate with clients and elevate issues to laboratory management.
  • Contribute to department objectives for continuous improvement and technical excellence.
  • Assist in mediating personnel conflicts within the team and contribute to a positive work atmosphere.

Requirements

  • BA/BS with 4+ years of related experience, MS with 2+ years of related experience, or PhD with 0+ years of related experience.
  • Analytical chemistry knowledge including theory and application of multiple fundamental analytical techniques for identification, purity, and assay of various analytes.
  • Perform and improve any laboratory procedures.
  • Operate and troubleshoot KF, U/HPLC, and LC-MS instruments.
  • Independently learn new instruments and techniques.
  • Apply undergraduate general, organic chemistry, and analytical chemistry to creatively solve problems.
  • Intermediate Word, Excel, and PowerPoint skills.
  • Perform common algebraic and statistical calculations correctly.
  • Proficient in technical writing and inter-department presentations.
  • Author and edit laboratory SOPs.
