About the position

The Center for Nondestructive Evaluation (CNDE) at Iowa State University is seeking a Research Scientist II to lead research efforts in Ultrasonic Testing (UT). This position requires a strong foundation in both theoretical and experimental aspects of UT, with a focus on elastodynamic field theory and computational modeling. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing, designing, and conducting complex research projects that involve modeling, simulations, and experiments. The role includes formulating research methods, identifying potential problems, and recommending solutions to improve research quality. The Research Scientist II will also assist in writing publications and grant proposals, train and mentor students in UT techniques, and coordinate data collection and analysis. This position is integral to CNDE's mission of providing cost-effective solutions to industrial challenges through collaboration with government and industry sponsors. The candidate will engage in professional activities, prepare technical reports, and may supervise a small group of students on research projects. This is an intermediate-level position that requires solid professional skills and the ability to work under general supervision to achieve research goals.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, design and conduct complex research projects in Ultrasonic Testing (UT).
  • Formulate research methods and suggest options for improving quality.
  • Identify potential problems and recommend solutions.
  • Assist with publications and writing or developing grant proposals.
  • Train and mentor others in Ultrasonic Testing modeling and simulations.
  • Coordinate data collection and screening and verify the data.
  • Conduct analysis of data and interpret research methodology based on outcomes.
  • Prepare technical reports, conference and journal papers.
  • May supervise a small work group of students on research projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and 2 years of related experience.
  • Ph.D. in an Engineering discipline or a closely related field (preferred).
  • Experience in both theoretical and experimental Ultrasonic Testing (UT) research.
  • Significant expertise in UT wave theory and modeling.
  • Experience with general wave propagation phenomena and elastic wave propagation.
  • Experience formulating wave propagation problems and implementing solutions analytically and/or numerically.
  • Experience with experimental UT measurements, including lab immersion, contact UT, and phased array UT.
  • Prior experience with industry UT practices.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in programming computational solutions for prediction of UT measurement responses.
  • Good working knowledge of elastodynamic field theory.
