About the position

Health Research, Inc. is seeking a Research Scientist II to work within the Wadsworth Center's Laboratory of Viral Diseases. This role is pivotal in the rapidly expanding field of wastewater testing, which has become a critical surveillance method for monitoring SARS-CoV-2 and other significant pathogens. The incumbent will join the largest state public health virology laboratory team in the United States and will actively participate in the largest state wastewater surveillance program in the country. The successful execution of high-quality testing of wastewater extracts is essential for the effective performance of all downstream laboratories and their outcomes. In this position, the Research Scientist II will engage in research and development focused on the processing and extraction of wastewater samples. This includes conducting research aimed at enhancing and optimizing quality control and quality assurance methods and procedures. The incumbent will also collaborate with data analysts to establish pipelines for data transfer and create data visualizations, ensuring that the laboratory's findings are effectively communicated and utilized. This role is part of a dynamic team dedicated to the Wadsworth Center's mission, which aligns with the New York State Department of Health's efforts to protect and promote the health of New York's citizens. Responsibilities

  • Participate in the largest state wastewater surveillance program in the country.
  • Perform high-quality testing of wastewater extracts.
  • Conduct research and development on methods for processing and extracting wastewater.
  • Optimize quality control and quality assurance methods and procedures.
  • Coordinate with data analysts regarding data transfer pipelines and visualizations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field and three years of research experience; or a Master's degree in a related field and two years of research experience; or a Doctorate in a related field.
  • At least three years of experience performing molecular methods, including at least one year handling infectious agents.
  • Experience working in a molecular biology laboratory performing and validating real-time or digital PCR assays.
  • Demonstrated experience using Microsoft Office software, including database management.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree in a biological/biomedical science.
  • Experience working with collaborators.
