About the position

The University of Cincinnati is seeking a Research Scientist to join the Department of Internal Medicine, specifically within the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine. This position is based in the lab of Dr. Frank McCormack and focuses on funded research projects that investigate the lung and pleural space's response to particulate exposures. The Research Scientist will be responsible for conducting research experiments, analyzing data, and ensuring compliance with university policies and procedures. This role is critical in advancing the understanding of pulmonary responses to environmental factors and contributes to the development of innovative clinical practices. The Research Scientist will modify and adapt experimental protocols, techniques, and procedures to meet specific project requirements. They will design, coordinate, and conduct experimental procedures, preparing research results for publication and presentation. The incumbent will maintain regulatory compliance and may submit research proposals as a principal investigator for funding opportunities. Additionally, the role may involve providing supervision to staff, including responsibilities such as hiring, performance evaluations, and approving time off. This position is integral to the ongoing research efforts at the UC College of Medicine, which has a long-standing reputation for excellence in training healthcare professionals and conducting impactful research. The successful candidate will play a vital role in enhancing the understanding of pulmonary health and contributing to the academic community's knowledge base.

Responsibilities

  • Modify and adapt experimental protocols, techniques, and procedures to specific project requirements.
  • Design, coordinate, and conduct experimental procedures.
  • Prepare research results and written summaries of results in manuscript form for publications and in graphics form for presentation at research meetings and for grant proposals.
  • Maintain and ensure compliance with regulatory protocols and records.
  • May submit research proposals as principal investigator for intramural/extramural funding.
  • May provide direct and/or indirect supervision to exempt and non-exempt staff, including hiring/firing, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, and approving time off.
  • Perform related duties based on departmental need.

Requirements

  • PhD in biological sciences and/or MD prior to the date of appointment.
  • At least 5 years of research experience in a basic science laboratory.
  • Skills in animal experimentation, genetic manipulation of mice and cells, and cell culture.
  • Ability to contribute meaningfully to grants and papers.
