About the position

The Oncology Pharmacology group at Novartis in Cambridge, MA is seeking a dedicated Research Scientist I/II - Lab Technician to join their team. This role is pivotal in supporting the development and characterization of novel therapeutics and targets, particularly through in vivo techniques in mice. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing a variety of in vivo procedures, including dosing via multiple routes (IV, IP, SQ, PO), conducting body weight measurements, and executing clinical observations. Additionally, the role involves sample and tissue harvests, necropsy, blood collection through various methods, and euthanasia, all while adhering to standard operating procedures (SOPs) and animal welfare regulations. In this position, the candidate will assist in pre-study laboratory activities related to in vivo pharmacology and manage multiple assignments while ensuring data quality and compliance with internal and external regulatory agencies. The work environment is a BSL 1 and/or 2 laboratory, where maintaining safety and compliance is paramount. The role requires a meticulous approach to laboratory tasks, including careful documentation and adherence to protocols, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a dynamic team. The position is a dual posting, meaning the final level and title will be determined based on the candidate's skills and experience. The Research Scientist I requires a GED or high school degree with relevant experience, while the Research Scientist II requires more extensive experience. Both roles demand proficiency in in vivo procedures and a strong understanding of animal welfare regulations. The successful candidate will also need to demonstrate excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to learn quickly in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform various in vivo procedures in rodents, including dosing (IV, IP, SQ, PO), body weight measurements, clinical observations, sample/tissue harvests, necropsy, blood collection, and euthanasia.
  • Assist in in vivo pharmacology pre-study laboratory activities and related ex vivo activities, such as preparing consumables and organizing reagent inventories.
  • Manage multiple assignments/projects while maintaining data quality and meeting timelines.
  • Maintain a safe working environment and adhere to applicable safety regulations in a BSL 1 and/or 2 laboratory.
  • Ensure compliance with all internal and external regulatory agencies regarding the care and use of laboratory animals.

Requirements

  • Research Scientist I: GED or High School degree with a 2-year degree in Veterinary Technology, 4-year Science degree with 1+ years of industry or academic experience, or a combination of experience with higher education preferred.
  • Research Scientist II: GED or High School degree with a 2-year degree in Veterinary Technology, 4-year Science degree with 3+ years of industry or academic experience, or a combination of experience with higher education preferred.
  • Proficiency with in vivo procedures in rodents, including multiple routes of dose administration and blood/sample collection.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn, multi-task, and possess good organizational skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and completion of tasks in an efficient manner.
  • Knowledge of Federal, state, and local Animal Welfare regulations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with cancer models (xenografts or syngeneic) and in vivo assays for pharmacokinetic evaluations.
  • Prior CRO experience.
