About the position

The Research Scientist in Machine Learning at UT Southwestern Medical Center focuses on developing and applying explainable machine learning and foundation models to analyze biomedical data. This role is part of the newly established Department of Biomedical Engineering, which aims to address clinical and scientific challenges in medicine and biology through innovative technologies. The position involves working on cutting-edge research in deep learning and causal modeling, particularly in the context of neurological disorders and oncology, with a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration and scientific development.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, coordinate, and direct assigned scientific or medical research projects.
  • Select or assist in the selection of key research personnel.
  • Determine specific goals or objectives to be attained and assign and review work of subordinates.
  • Plan experimental protocols and review and analyze resulting research data.
  • Revise techniques or approaches to work problems as indicated by research data.
  • Compile, write, and submit research results to supervisor.
  • Prepare or assist in the preparation of research papers, reports, and abstracts for publication as a co-author.
  • Design, develop, or adapt equipment used in experiments or research to obtain desired results.
  • Plan and supervise training of technicians and other laboratory personnel regarding proper laboratory techniques and safety procedures.
  • Confer with industrial, governmental, or other groups concerning progress or results of research projects.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. degree with major coursework in a relevant field and five years of research experience, including at least two years at the level of Senior Research Associate or equivalent.
  • Master's degree with major coursework in a relevant field and seven years of research experience, including at least three years at the level of Senior Research Associate or equivalent.
  • Bachelor's degree with major coursework in a relevant field and nine years of research experience, including at least four years at the level of Senior Research Associate or equivalent.
  • Strong programming ability and experience with machine learning.
  • Publications demonstrating application of leading methods and/or algorithmic innovation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous experience in image analysis (e.g., MRI, endoscopy).
  • Experience with PEFT for foundation models.
  • Knowledge of explainable AI and causal discovery/inference.
  • Strong background in neuroscience, oncology, or radiology.
