About the position

The Quantum Computing and Sensing Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a Research Scientist specializing in experimental quantum information science. This role involves conducting research in quantum communication, quantum computing, and quantum-enhanced sensing, with a focus on developing innovative solutions to significant national challenges. The position requires collaboration with various stakeholders, leading research projects, and disseminating findings through publications and presentations.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in new and ongoing research in quantum communication, quantum computing, and quantum-enhanced sensing.
  • Formulate novel quantum information solutions to problems of national interest and plan and execute the necessary research and development.
  • Lead and take part in multiple R&D projects.
  • Interpret, report, and present research concepts and results to national audiences at all levels.
  • Work with customers independently or in teams to develop requirements and proposals, conduct research, and produce working prototypes for demonstration.
  • Write peer-reviewed papers, technical reports, and proposals for internal and external release.
  • Represent the organization by giving technical presentations in large public forums.
  • Align behaviors, priorities, and interactions with ORNL's core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service.
  • Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in the workplace.

Requirements

  • A Ph.D. in physics, optics, electrical engineering, or a directly related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in experimental quantum information outside of Ph.D.

Nice-to-haves

  • Five or more years of quantum information work experience at a tertiary institution or in an appropriate industry or government laboratory.
  • Independent research competence demonstrated by a significant number of national and/or international peer-reviewed publications and a sustained publication record.
  • Experimental experience in atomic molecular optical physics, quantum optics, or quantum sensing experiments.
