About the position

The Quantum Sensing and Computing Group in the Computational Sciences and Engineering Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking candidates for research staff positions in experimental quantum information science, with a particular focus on ion trap quantum computing. This role involves participating in both new and ongoing research initiatives in the fields of quantum communication, quantum computing, and quantum-enhanced sensing. The successful candidate will be responsible for formulating innovative quantum information solutions to address problems of national interest and will plan and execute the necessary research and development to implement these solutions practically. In this position, you will lead and participate in multiple research and development projects, interpreting, reporting, and presenting research concepts and results to national audiences at various levels. Collaboration is key, as you will work with customers both independently and in teams to develop requirements and proposals, conduct research, and produce working prototypes for demonstration purposes. Additionally, you will be expected to write peer-reviewed papers, technical reports, and proposals for both internal and external release, representing the organization by delivering technical presentations in large public forums. This role is ideal for individuals with a strong background in experimental quantum information science, particularly those who have experience with ion trapping techniques. The position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in quantum technologies that have significant implications for national security and technological advancement.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in new and ongoing research in quantum communication, quantum computing, and quantum-enhanced sensing.
  • Formulate novel quantum information solutions to problems of national interest and plan and execute the necessary research and development for practical implementation.
  • Lead and take part in multiple R&D projects.

Requirements

  • A Ph.D. in physics, optics, computer science, or a directly related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in experimental ion trapping outside of Ph.D.

Nice-to-haves

  • Five or more years of quantum information work experience at a tertiary institution or in an appropriate industry or government laboratory.
  • Independent research competence as demonstrated by a significant number of national and/or international peer-reviewed publications and a sustained publication record.
