About the position

At Meta Reality Labs, we are at the forefront of developing input technologies that will shape the future of virtual and augmented reality computing platforms. We are seeking a creative, skilled, and motivated Research Scientist to join our machine perception team. This role is pivotal in advancing the state-of-the-art in human understanding, action recognition, and statistical text decoding. As a Research Scientist, you will collaborate with a diverse team of research scientists, software engineers, and hardware engineers to design and implement technical solutions in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment. In this position, you will contribute to and apply research that enhances Meta products by developing novel input technologies for virtual reality (VR), mixed reality (MR), and augmented reality (AR) systems, leveraging your expertise in computer vision and machine learning. You will be responsible for designing and prototyping interactive experiences, evaluating them through user research, and creating data collection systems to accelerate machine learning processes. Your collaboration across teams will be essential in developing concepts that advance the entire product pipeline, encompassing hardware, software, data collection, and machine learning. This role requires a strong foundation in both theoretical and practical aspects of machine perception, as well as the ability to innovate and extend research ideas to address new problem domains or constraints. You will be expected to engage in cross-group and cross-culture collaboration, contributing to a dynamic and inclusive work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to and apply research that advances Meta products by developing novel input technologies for VR, MR, and AR systems based on computer vision and machine learning.
  • Design and prototype interactive experiences and evaluate them through user research.
  • Design and prototype data collection systems to accelerate machine learning.
  • Collaborate and work across teams to develop concepts that advance the entire product pipeline (hardware, software, data collection, machine learning, etc.).

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • PhD in Computer Science or a related field with published projects in machine learning, deep learning, and/or computer vision.
  • Proven experience in designing data collection protocols and quality control, with solid contributions in constructing high-quality computer vision and machine learning datasets.
  • Technical knowledge across a range of topics including machine learning, optimization, Bayesian statistics, and state estimation.
  • Experience innovating or extending research ideas for new problem domains or for fitting new constraints.
  • Interpersonal experience in cross-group and cross-culture collaboration.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience transferring technology from research in computer vision, machine perception, or machine learning into a shipping product.
  • Experience with joint hardware-software development and associated rapid prototyping.
  • Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, and first-authored publications at AI conferences such as CVPR, ECCV/ICCV, SIGGRAPH, NeurIPS, ICLR, ACL, or similar.
  • Demonstrated software engineering experience via an internship, work experience, coding competitions, or widely used contributions in open source repositories (e.g., GitHub).

Benefits

  • Competitive salary ranging from $143,000 to $208,000 per year, plus bonus and equity.
  • Comprehensive health insurance coverage.
  • 401(k) retirement savings plan with company matching.
  • Paid time off and holidays.
  • Opportunities for professional development and continued education.
