About the position

The Research Scientist position at The Miriam Hospital involves leading research activities within the Centers for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine. The role includes preparing grant proposals, supervising research staff, publishing findings in peer-reviewed journals, and providing expert consultation. The scientist will ensure compliance with research policies and procedures while directing the laboratory's research efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and submits research grant applications to the National Institutes of Health and other sponsors.
  • Supervises postdoctoral fellows, research assistants, and other lab personnel, including hiring, training, assigning work, providing feedback, evaluating performance, and disciplining when necessary.
  • Assumes primary responsibility for the development, communication, and compliance with policies and procedures for research and administrative functions.
  • Identifies internal and external funding opportunities and collaborates with the Office of Research Administration on grant applications.
  • Determines the direction of research efforts by reviewing previous research data and external papers to identify problem areas.
  • Sets up hypotheses and designs experiments to test them.
  • Responsible for the development of research methodology used.
  • Ensures accurate collection and analysis of data gathered in research experiments.
  • Interprets data using statistical methodology.
  • Prepares, writes, and presents papers for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals as the Principal Investigator on research projects.
  • Participates in Hospital committees, both research and non-research.
  • Contacts individuals both internal and external to the Hospital to provide professional consultation and exchange information.

Requirements

  • Completion of a M.D. and/or Ph.D. in the appropriate scientific field.
  • In-depth knowledge of the scientific field in which research is being performed.
  • Supervisory skills to direct research assistants, senior research assistants, project directors, and other research staff.
  • Grant-writing skills.
  • Interpersonal skills to interface both externally and internally to the Hospital.
  • Peer-reviewed publications in professional journals.
  • One year of postdoctoral experience in research as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and prior grant writing.
