About the position

The Research System Administrator at Missouri University of Science and Technology is a professional, exempt position responsible for the design, implementation, management, and support of Linux workstations and research instrumentation. The role requires providing technical support, maintaining operating systems and servers, and staying current with emerging IT trends related to research computing. The successful candidate will work under pressure, maintain professionalism, and possess outstanding communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, manage, and support complex operating systems/platforms.
  • Analyze, document, install, and maintain operating systems and servers, storage systems, and other systems supported by the IT department.
  • Provide technical support to internal constituents.
  • Stay current with emerging trends in IT related to research computing.
  • Configure, implement, and support Linux Workstation Environment.
  • Build HPC desktop Windows and Linux machines; provide Tier 2 and Tier 3 Windows workstation environment support.
  • Support configuration and maintenance of research instrumentation and workstations.
  • Configure, implement, and support High Performance Computing clusters.
  • Troubleshoot field hardware and software, assisting users with research technology challenges.
  • Consult with users to build non-standard machines such as HPC desktops to meet their needs.
  • Supervise a small number of students, including coaching, mentoring, and task assignment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer, electrical, or electronic engineering, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Working knowledge of programming languages, operating systems, direct access techniques, remote processing, and virtual systems.
  • Knowledge of the theory, principles, and practices of operating systems, networking, and applications.
  • Security-minded with a commitment to continued professional development.
  • Demonstrated ability to research, identify, and correct problems using system utilities/diagnostics.
  • Familiarity with systems analysis procedures and techniques.
  • Curiosity and tenacity for solving complex problems in disparate systems.
  • Extensive knowledge of Windows and Linux systems.
  • Excellent communication skills with a variety of users and technical experts.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Linux Configuration Management (e.g., Puppet).
  • Experience with multi-system integration.
  • Familiarity with data collection tools and various engineering software (Matlab, Abacus, Ansys, Solidworks, etc.).
  • Experience with various versions of Windows and Linux (Debian, Redhat).
