About the position

The Research Technician position in the Biomedical Engineering department at Carnegie Mellon University involves supporting the Cohen-Karni team in the development of living pharmacy devices and conducting implantation studies using animal models. The role encompasses overseeing surgical and experimental activities, maintaining laboratory inventory, and collaborating with various stakeholders to ensure the success of research projects aimed at enhancing bioelectrical devices.

Responsibilities

  • Maintaining lab inventory and documentation without direct supervision.
  • Independently maintaining lab instruments, equipment, and facilities for teaching or research purposes.
  • Coordinating, setting up for, and running daily experiments, including collecting experimental data.
  • Assisting and performing surgical procedures as needed.
  • Maintaining an organized laboratory environment, including stocking supplies and ordering inventory.
  • Coordinating apparatus design, build, and refinement.
  • Initiating repair or maintenance of equipment and instruments as necessary.
  • Maintaining laboratory and animal health records.
  • Monitoring and performing post-operative care of research subjects.
  • Maintaining the lab safety plan and safety data sheets; scheduling safety training for new hires or team members; enforcing policies around personal protective equipment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in the medical or biological sciences or Associate's degree plus veterinary technician certificate or a minimum of two years of research experience preferably in the medical, animal or biological sciences.
  • Certification through American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) is preferred.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills with experience in experimental data collection and analysis.
  • Ability to work well with others and manage a research team.
  • Ability to respond to and manage emergency situations and/or crises.
  • Ability to work with sensitive information, maintain confidentiality and use discretion.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail; keep and maintain accurate and detailed reports and records.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in veterinary practices or animal care.
  • Familiarity with laboratory safety protocols and procedures.
