About the position

The Research Technician II position at Houston Methodist is responsible for conducting scientific analyses and tests necessary for research under moderate supervision. This role involves performing advanced assays, imaging experiments, and other technical duties to support laboratory research activities, including working with animal models and human subjects. The technician may also provide supervision and guidance to junior technicians, contributing to a collaborative and dynamic work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform intermediate bench chemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, or other scientific techniques according to protocol.
  • Conduct various advanced assays, basic image analysis, and imaging experiments to assist with laboratory research activities.
  • Organize workflow, proactively problem-solve, and manage multiple ongoing priorities while communicating needs and issues effectively.
  • Implement interventions to ensure quality outcomes and conduct quality audits on equipment and processes.
  • Independently perform safe collection and handling of human/animal tissue, blood, or other biological specimens, including basic animal husbandry.
  • Assist in writing laboratory protocols or procedures.
  • Evaluate and report on inventory levels and work with leadership to order appropriate laboratory supplies and equipment.
  • Seek opportunities for professional development and complete an Individual Development Plan (IDP).

Requirements

  • Associates degree or two additional years of relevant laboratory experience in lieu of a degree required.
  • Demonstrates necessary skills and competencies to safely perform assigned job duties, assessed through ongoing evaluations.
  • Sufficient proficiency in English to perform essential functions, especially regarding patient or employee safety.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers with a customer service focus.
  • Ability to work independently and handle challenging situations with sound judgment and analytical skills.
  • Effective time management skills and experience with computer spreadsheets and databases, competent in Microsoft Office products.
