About the position

The Research Technician II - Neurogenetics position at the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute is focused on supporting research aimed at discovering genetic causes of childhood neurological disorders. The role involves working with a collaborative team to conduct studies on fruit flies and mice, utilizing molecular biology, neurohistology, and behavioral analysis to contribute to understanding neural circuit development and its implications for brain disorders.

Responsibilities

  • Performs fruit fly and/or mouse colony maintenance.
  • Conducts behavioral studies and histology (rodent and/or fruit fly assays).
  • Troubleshoots problematic results and maintains laboratory equipment.
  • Collects, processes, ships, and maintains paperwork for biological specimens.
  • Collects, compiles, records, and analyzes data.
  • Retrieves and submits test results to appropriate parties.
  • Maintains databases, records, and regulatory documents for studies.
  • Maintains and organizes inventory of supplies and equipment.
  • Generates data reports to determine feasibility.
  • Conducts literature searches and summarizes information.
  • Attends and presents at group and individual meetings.
  • Moves and lifts items including mouse cages and fruit fly racks, prepares research samples for processing, and restocks laboratory supplies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field (or four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement).
  • No prior experience required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Laboratory experience handling mice and/or fruit flies.
  • One year of work experience in a basic science research laboratory.
  • Proficient in Excel spreadsheets and basic statistical analyses.
