About the position

The Research Technician II position at California State University, East Bay is a temporary, part-time role focused on conducting experimental procedures in a research laboratory. This position is grant-funded and will work closely with the Principal Investigator on projects related to Drosophila behavioral genetics, particularly in the areas of sleep, feeding, and wakefulness. The role requires advanced microscopy skills and a commitment to lab safety and diversity in the workplace.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct experiments and analysis including experimental design, literature review, data collection, analysis, equipment set-up and maintenance.
  • Perform advanced neuronal imaging using calcium, voltage and fluorescence indicators with confocal and live imaging microscopes.
  • Train undergraduate and MS students in dissecting, staining, and imaging samples.
  • Conduct behavioral assays including sleep assays and feeding studies, modifying protocols as needed.
  • Set up animal behavior research experiments, including lights, cameras, and designing 3D printed parts.
  • Develop analysis and tracking programs for complex behavioral data sets.
  • Perform data entry and maintain data files on research and protocols, assisting with manuscript preparation.
  • Maintain Drosophila lines, prepare fly food, and perform genetic crosses.
  • Prepare reagents and chemically defined Drosophila media, rear multiple transgenic fly lines, and sort flies based on genotypes.
  • Dissect and stain fly brains, analyze data using Excel, Graphpad Prism, and R, and assist the PI with identifying consumables and equipment for ordering.
  • Comply with established safety procedures and maintain required documentation on laboratory and specimen conditions.

Requirements

  • Two years of progressively responsible experience in technical research or statistical work in data collection, compilation, and analysis.
  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university.

Nice-to-haves

  • Immunohistochemistry experience for staining brain tissue samples.
  • Proficiency in using stereo microscopes, fluorescence, and confocal microscopes.
  • Experience in animal behavior research and knowledge of acrylic molding for designing 3D printed parts.
  • Familiarity with Drosophila genetics and ability to breed flies for experiments.
  • Ability to prepare reagents and rear multiple transgenic fly lines.
  • Data analysis skills using Excel, Graphpad Prism, and R.
  • Excellent verbal, written communication, and analytical skills.
