About the position

The Research Technician position at the Rangaraju Lab of the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience focuses on supporting research into the cellular and molecular mechanisms of neuronal energy use during plasticity. The role involves managing in vitro neuronal cultures, overseeing lab inventory, and maintaining experimental devices, contributing to cutting-edge neuroscience research.

Responsibilities

  • Preparing and managing in vitro neuronal cultures, including dissection of hippocampi and cortices, preparation of dissociated neurons for growth in culture, feeding and monitoring the health of cultures, and preparing stock solutions and chemicals for experimental use.
  • Maintaining and managing experimental devices and lab machinery, including incubators, CO2 tanks, laser chillers, vacuum pumps, and dissection hoods.
  • Performing regular sanitation of the cell culture room.
  • Managing lab inventory and finances, including ordering and purchasing reagents, chemicals, devices, and supplies for lab members.
  • Genotyping and maxi prepping DNA plasmids.
  • Discarding sharp hazardous waste and liquid hazardous waste.
  • Communicating with representatives of external organizations regarding purchases and installations.
  • Receiving and approving incoming shipments and invoices.
  • Archiving purchases, product information, experimental protocols, and lab history.
  • Performing onboarding and exit protocols for lab members.
  • Overseeing lab inspections and MPFI facilities-related inquiries and maintenance.

Requirements

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in a related scientific discipline is required.
  • Previous experience preparing neuronal cultures and basic molecular and cell biological techniques is preferred.
  • Critical thinking and attention to detail are required.
  • Ability to work in a team and excellent problem-solving skills are necessary.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to follow scientific protocols while being flexible and open to change are essential.
  • Well organized with fundamental knowledge of biology and chemistry-relevant mathematics.
