About the position

The Center for the Study of the Neurobiology of Addiction, Pain and Emotion Research Lab (NAPE) has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Technologist I to assist with experiments examining neuromodulatory circuits and signaling in affective behavior. The Research Technologist I will be working with the Bruchas Lab with a direct report to Dr. Bruchas. As a center of excellence that collaborates with many departments and schools in the University, the NAPE lab is associated with the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, located at the University of Washington's Health Science Building.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with research studies, experiments and assays in mice under supervisor's instruction.
  • Prepare solutions for experiments.
  • Conduct mouse brain tissue immunohistochemistry and anatomy.
  • Perform viral injections and circuit tracing.
  • Engage in optogenetics and physiology experiments.
  • Conduct neuronal imaging and mouse behavioral experiments.
  • Assist with mouse surgical implants and stereotaxic surgery.
  • Compile data and present findings to supervisor.
  • Perform analysis of data using statistical programs associated with the Center.
  • Manage mouse colony including breeding cages setup, weaning litters, and genotyping PCR.
  • Transfer mouse cages between facilities upon request and provide reports on ongoing projects.
  • Assist with animal protocols modification and maintain inventory of lab supplies.
  • Support general laboratory maintenance and assist postdoctoral fellows and graduate students on various projects.

Requirements

  • Two years' experience as a Laboratory Technician II, or equivalent; OR a Bachelor's Degree in an appropriate field of science or technology.
  • Understanding of general scientific approach to research.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Ability to manage several projects with multiple timelines.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • Highly motivated with the ability to work independently and cooperatively in a group setting.
  • Willingness and ability to assist others in research activities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Laboratory research experience with animals.
  • Prior experience with solution preparation.
  • Prior experience performing PCR.
  • Experience with mouse colony management including breeding and genotyping.
  • Prior experience in animal models of neuropsychiatric or neurodevelopmental disorders.
  • Prior exposure to optogenetic techniques.
  • Familiarity with Python and Matlab programming environments and statistical methodologies.
