About the position

The Researcher (R2) position at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa focuses on Geospatial Data Acquisition, Analysis, and Management within the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience. This temporary, full-time role involves coordinating and performing tasks that contribute to the Land Care Extension program, particularly in the collection, development, management, and analysis of spatial data to inform hazard mitigation planning. The researcher will work under the direction of the Principal Investigator and will be responsible for various data-related tasks across different geographical locations in Hawaii.

Responsibilities

  • Compiles, manages, and develops new spatial data sets related to vegetation, infrastructure, natural hazards, and community vulnerability in Hawaii.
  • Validates existing data and collects new data from land manager discussions, field mapping, satellite remote sensing, and UAV technology.
  • Communicates with and responds to mapping requests from researchers, project collaborators, and other project partners.
  • Develops data visualizations, presents data and information to end-users, receives and directly responds to end-user data needs and feedback.
  • Works as part of a team by collecting, processing, and providing spatial information to inform collective hazard mitigation planning.
  • Develops and disseminates tools and protocols for mapping and managing data on fires and other natural hazards.
  • Summarizes and analyzes data collected and produces reports and professional oral and written publications.
  • Supervises technicians and/or student hires.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • A Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in Natural Resources Management, Biology, Ecology, or a related quantitative field.
  • Three to four years of professional experience with responsibilities for data collection, management, and statistical analysis through fieldwork, remote sensing, and/or use of Geospatial Information Systems.
  • Knowledge of data management and analysis tools such as R, Google Earth Engine, ArcGIS.
  • Knowledge and experience with Hawaii or other Pacific Island vegetation types, landscapes, and existing data products.
  • Familiarity with data organization, storage and manipulation in various formats (e.g. rasters, NetCDF).
  • Ability to design and develop statistical summaries and data analysis methods and interpret results.
  • Ability to collect ecological field data with surveys, GPS and/or UAVs.
  • Proficiency with basic office productivity software tools (e.g. word processors, spreadsheets, presentation).
  • Strong quantitative, organizational skills, and communication skills, including oral and written venues.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with drone/UAV operation, data collection, and management.
  • Experience facilitating end-user communication and engagement through one-on-one meetings and workshops.
