About the position

The Residence Hall Director (RHD) is a live-in position responsible for overseeing community development and providing a living-learning experience for undergraduate students in residence halls. The RHD will manage program development, supervise Resident Advisers, and support student organizations while ensuring a safe and supportive environment. This role requires strong administrative and counseling skills, as well as the ability to respond to emergencies and crises effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students in taking responsibility for the safety and well-being of fellow community members and the physical environment.
  • Provide support to students experiencing wellness-related concerns.
  • Document conduct concerns and adjudicate cases as needed.
  • Serve on the emergency crisis response team and adhere to University and department protocols and policies.
  • Provide direction to Resident Advisers and contact other professionals around facilities during emergencies.
  • Counsel, advise, and provide referrals for residents in need of professional services.
  • Attend required meetings, including departmental, area, committee, and Hall Council meetings.
  • Maintain program calendar for the residential community and manage hall budget and day-to-day spending.
  • Train and oversee 8-16 Resident Advisers, facilitating weekly team meetings.
  • Build a sense of community supporting a living and learning environment and advise Hall Council.
  • Work with appropriate staff to monitor the upkeep of the residence halls and support students' efforts to maintain them.
  • Commit to ongoing professional growth and learning, assessing programs to improve the quality of the residential experience.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and/or its equivalent required.
  • Minimum two years' related experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of residence life, student wellness, leadership development, multicultural theory, and program development.
  • Strong communication skills with young adults from diverse backgrounds.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to exercise a high degree of diplomacy and discretion.
  • Well-organized administrative skills and computer literacy, specifically in web-based programs, Microsoft Office, and email.
  • Availability for after-hours/weekend/holiday on-call duties on a rotational basis.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's Degree in Higher Education, Student Personnel Administration, Counseling or related field preferred.
  • Experience following up on student wellness concerns and working with young adults in an urban setting preferred.
