About the position

The Resident Aide at BrookHaven Retirement Community is responsible for providing basic care to residents, addressing their physical, social, and environmental needs. This role involves working under the direction of a nurse and requires a commitment to ensuring the comfort and safety of residents while assisting with daily activities and personal care tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately measure and record information such as vitals, height, weight, and blood sugars as instructed.
  • Assist residents with bathing, dressing, grooming, nail care, oral hygiene, and the use of adaptive devices as needed.
  • Help residents with ambulating, positioning, turning, and transferring into and out of beds, chairs, showers, and wheelchairs, ensuring safety.
  • Assist residents with bowel and bladder functions and toileting programs, performing peri-care as needed.
  • Respond promptly to call lights and ensure they are within reach of residents.
  • Participate in nursing report, providing feedback on resident needs or changes in conditions, and follow the plan of care.
  • Explain procedures to residents before delivering care and honor their preferences.
  • Use supplies economically and report supply needs to the charge nurse for re-ordering.
  • Ensure residents present a neat and clean appearance and that their clothing is appropriate and clean.
  • Change bed linens as scheduled, following proper handling techniques and infection control protocols.
  • Collect, wash, dry, fold, and return soiled laundry/linen to resident rooms timely.
  • Assist residents in preparation for and transportation to appointments, activities, and dining areas.
  • Lead activities as assigned and deliver mail and packages to residents.
  • Serve meals and snacks, ensuring an excellent dining experience and that supplements are given as ordered.
  • Encourage residents to drink water and set dining room tables for meals.
  • Clean the dining room and kitchen, ensuring it is stocked with needed supplies and following cleaning schedules.
  • Perform a variety of general cleaning activities including dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate in English.
  • Ability to read labels and follow instructions for safe handling of cleaning materials.
  • Ability to operate a variety of equipment.
  • Basic first aid training necessary within the first two weeks of employment.
  • Familiarity with Residents' Rights.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous experience working with the elderly is preferred, but not required.
