About the position

The Resident Engineer will manage contractors and coordinate with various stakeholders to ensure the successful execution of highway and bridge construction projects in Sacramento, CA. This part-time position involves overseeing project activities, ensuring compliance with specifications, and maintaining documentation while fostering a safe work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Manage contractors and coordinate with outside agencies, design professionals, and other project participants.
  • Provide supervision, direction, and training of staff in inspection, documentation, and safety awareness.
  • Coordinate daily with contractors, clients, and staff to ensure project compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Interpret, organize, execute, manage, and coordinate assignments on projects.
  • Identify and communicate resources needed for successful project execution.
  • Monitor construction project activities and maintain proper documentation of the work.
  • Provide advice and consultation to clients on construction matters, including compliance with federal and state laws and regulations.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously and maintain high organization.
  • Ensure a safe work environment is maintained.
  • Verify that materials meet specifications and contract requirements.
  • Prepare and process change orders.
  • Review and check inspectors' pay quantities.
  • Attend progress meetings and prepare meeting minutes.
  • Review and recommend approval or denial of contractors' submittals.
  • Investigate and recommend design changes to the plans.
  • Oversee and develop staff.
  • Engage with local engineering groups.
  • Assist in the development of new business and marketing to potential and existing clients.

Requirements

  • BA/BS degree and 8 years of relevant experience or equivalent education/experience.
  • Valid driver's license.

Nice-to-haves

  • 12+ years of experience with construction of highways, roads, and bridges.
  • Registration as a California Professional Engineer.
  • Effective communication and negotiation skills with contractors and clients.
  • Working knowledge of State/Federal Highway and Bridge Construction specifications and contract administration procedures.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office tools (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • 5+ years of experience with Caltrans highway/bridge construction and maintenance projects.
  • Experience with Caltrans construction procedures and documentation.
  • Extensive knowledge of highway/bridge design, construction, and materials.
  • Experience with Primavera scheduling and dispute/claim resolution.
  • Thorough knowledge of Caltrans specifications and construction contract administration procedures.
