About the position

The Residential Instructor is responsible for overseeing the daily operations and supervision of consumers with developmental disabilities. This role involves implementing behavior management programs, ensuring safety and cleanliness in the residential environment, and providing support and advocacy for consumers. The instructor will document activities, manage medication administration, and engage consumers in various activities while adhering to agency policies and state regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor consumer behavior and implement behavior management programs.
  • Document all shift activities and incidents in the log and on consumers in Therap.
  • Provide programmatic and statistical reports as required.
  • Maintain safety, appearance, and cleanliness of the home.
  • Conduct sanitation and safety inspections of all internal and external areas of equipment/house.
  • Make minor repairs and alert supervisor to potential major problems.
  • Maintain a professional attitude with co-workers, management, and outside agencies.
  • Know consumers' location at all times and implement all Agency policies and procedures.
  • Alert appropriate personnel regarding problems or unusual occurrences.
  • Complete incident reports pertaining to consumers and/or workers compensation in a timely manner.
  • Implement and adhere to all policies, procedures, and legal commitments to consumers as required by the Connecticut Department of Developmental Services.
  • Act as an advocate and appropriate role model for consumers.
  • Assist or complete any necessary hygiene needed for consumers.
  • Document all activity pertaining to the welfare of the home or consumer.
  • Distribute all medications according to each consumer's medication schedule.
  • Provide activities or programs for consumers during each shift.
  • Provide counseling or reinforcement to assigned consumers.
  • Assist in supervising and safely transporting residents to community activities.
  • Know and follow emergency home procedures for serious incidents affecting residents.
  • Assist guardians and parents in understanding normalization/person-centered-planning principles.
  • Report and respond to any violation of individuals' rights.
  • Assist in shopping, meal preparation, set-up, and clean-up when on duty.
  • Attend in-service training and provide training for Agency personnel as required.

Requirements

  • Minimum possession of a High School Diploma or a G.E.D.
  • Minimum two years experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities or dually diagnosed individuals, or equivalent education.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to be insured by the agency's insurance company.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain certifications in CPR, First Aid, PMT, and DDS State Medication Administration.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and physically intervene with individuals as required.
