About the position

The position is responsible for underwriting the Bank's residential lending programs, including correspondent and agency loans, while ensuring compliance with investor guidelines and government regulations. The underwriter will make lending decisions within a specified authority and support the bank's residential lending initiatives by providing thorough underwriting services for various loan products.

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite residential loans to render lending decisions, including conventional agency and portfolio loans.
  • Make sound lending decisions within assigned authority up to $500,000 and recommend loans requiring higher authority.
  • Ensure compliance with bank and investor guidelines for all mortgage loans.
  • Analyze challenging loan packages to provide credit solutions that maximize profit and minimize risk.
  • Calculate debt ratios, analyze income, and review credit reports and appraisals to ensure loan acceptability.
  • Review files for compliance with federal and state regulations, including HMDA and fair lending regulations.
  • Communicate with internal and external customers to resolve underwriting issues.
  • Maintain accurate records in a paperless environment and stay informed of market trends and regulatory changes.

Requirements

  • 5-7 years of residential mortgage loan underwriting experience, specifically with FNMA and FHMLC.
  • Correspondent lending experience is required.
  • Expertise with Fannie Mae DU/DO and Freddie Mac LP programs and policies is preferred.
  • Knowledge of federal and state regulatory requirements related to mortgage lending.
  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills with a thorough understanding of credit and financial analysis.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with Encompass LOS is preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from various stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with fraud detection techniques.
  • Experience working with Origination and Processing staff.
