About the position

The Respiratory Care Practitioner at Sutter Health is responsible for performing therapeutic, diagnostic, and emergency respiratory care procedures. This role involves assessing, treating, and evaluating patients who suffer from respiratory insufficiencies or abnormalities. The practitioner must exercise sound judgment and utilize developed clinical skills to contribute to and implement the patient's care plan based on diagnoses and physician orders in a timely manner. Building confidence and cooperation from patients, their families, and other healthcare providers is essential, achieved through competent patient assessment, attentive monitoring, and effective communication. The position requires adherence to all local, state, and federal regulations, codes, policies, and procedures to ensure privacy and safety while delivering optimal patient care. The practitioner may also be responsible for performing specific procedures and orienting other staff members to the department. This role is critical in ensuring that patients receive the highest quality of respiratory care, especially in emergency situations. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in respiratory therapy principles and procedures, with the ability to respond effectively to traumas and various hospital emergencies. They will be expected to interpret a variety of data and instructions, perform routine or emergency respiratory care, and possess a basic understanding of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical terminology. Excellent communication skills are necessary to convey sensitive information clearly and professionally to diverse audiences, including non-medical individuals. The practitioner will also need to manage their time effectively, prioritize assignments, and work within standardized operating procedures to meet objectives and deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Perform therapeutic, diagnostic, and emergency respiratory care procedures.
  • Assess, treat, and evaluate patients with respiratory insufficiencies or abnormalities.
  • Implement the patient's plan of care based on diagnosis and physician orders.
  • Build confidence and cooperation from patients and their families through effective communication and care.
  • Adhere to local, state, and federal regulations to ensure privacy and safety in patient care.
  • Perform specific procedures and orient other staff to the department as needed.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a two-year respiratory care program accredited by the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC).
  • RCP-Respiratory Care Practitioner certification.
  • NRP-Neonatal Resuscitation Provider certification if required at the entity.
  • RRT-Registered Respiratory Therapist certification within 90 days OR CRT-Certified Respiratory Therapist certification within 90 days.
  • BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification.
  • 2 years of recent relevant experience in respiratory care.
  • Knowledge of respiratory therapy principles, procedures, and equipment.
  • Ability to interpret various data and instructions in multiple formats.
  • Capable of performing routine and emergency respiratory care.
  • Basic understanding of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical terminology.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to explain sensitive information clearly.
  • Well-developed time management and organizational skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience responding to traumas and various hospital emergencies.
  • General knowledge of computer applications, such as Microsoft Office Suite and electronic health records (EHR).
