About the position

The Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago is responsible for providing respiratory care services to neonatal, pediatric, and adult patients. This role involves direct patient care, operating and maintaining respiratory equipment, and acting as a resource for patients and families regarding pulmonary illnesses. The RCP will also engage in patient assessment, education, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to ensure effective care delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Perform respiratory care according to policies/procedures/protocols.
  • Anticipate impending emergent situations and intervene effectively.
  • Institute, monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot respiratory care equipment including mechanical ventilation and oxygen delivery devices.
  • Provide airway care, administer inhaled medications, and perform airway clearance and lung expansion therapy.
  • Perform patient assessment and analyze laboratory and diagnostic data to assist in patient care planning.
  • Teach, educate, and precept new employees, orientees, and students.
  • Initiate, monitor, and maintain therapeutic gases including heliox and nitric oxide.
  • Communicate with families and multidisciplinary team members to identify healthcare needs.
  • Evaluate patient progress through continuous observation and assessment of responses to interventions.
  • Recommend revisions in care plans according to changes in patient needs.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of chemical disinfection and sterilization protocols.
  • Stay updated in respiratory care by utilizing current literature for information and problem solving.
  • Incorporate hospital and departmental quality initiatives into daily activities.
  • Work cooperatively as a team member to achieve department and hospital goals.
  • Adhere to communication, service excellence, and professional image standards.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a CoARC accredited program in respiratory care.
  • Licensure as a Respiratory Care Practitioner in Illinois, active and in good standing.
  • Basic Life Support Certification from American Heart Association.
  • Ability to demonstrate critical thinking skills and adaptability.
  • Skills and judgment necessary to implement medical plans of care and clinical interventions.
  • Effective communication skills with patients, families, physicians, and hospital staff.
  • Active CRT certification from NBRC, with Registered Respiratory Therapist certification required within the first year of hire.
  • Required certifications: PALS, NRP, ACLS within the first year of hire.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Respiratory Therapy.
