About the position

The Respiratory Therapist position at Guthrie involves performing respiratory therapy treatment modalities across various treatment areas, including the Intensive Care Unit. The role includes assisting during cardiopulmonary resuscitation, monitoring ventilator cases, and providing respiratory care for patients of all age groups. The therapist will also take charge responsibility and assist physicians during bronchoscopies after completing the necessary competencies.

Responsibilities

  • Perform respiratory therapy treatment modalities in all treatment areas including the Intensive Care Unit.
  • Assist during cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Monitor and treat all ventilator cases.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of growth and development principles to provide respiratory care for patients of all age groups.
  • Take charge responsibility and assist physicians during bronchoscopies.
  • Conduct assessments, treatments, and monitoring of ventilator cases in critical care and medical/surgery areas.
  • Perform Respiratory Therapy Protocol and assessments compliant with standards of practice.
  • Review existing data in patient records including respiratory care orders and progress notes.
  • Recommend collection of additional data through chest x-ray and blood gas analysis.
  • Perform maintenance on the blood analyzer machine.
  • Educate patients on planned therapies and goals, including COPD and smoking cessation.
  • Draw and process ABGs using current equipment.
  • Perform EKGs, Holter monitor setups, and home sleep study device setups.
  • Assist with the orientation of new Respiratory Care Practitioners.
  • Demonstrate cost-effective patient care by utilizing resources responsibly.
  • Recognize emergency situations and initiate proper action plans.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in scheduling to meet patient care requirements.

Requirements

  • Must possess a minimum of an A.S. or A.A.S. degree from a CoARC approved Respiratory program.
  • Licensed by the State of Pennsylvania as a Respiratory Therapist.
  • Certified or Registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care.
  • Graduate of a CoARC approved Respiratory Therapy Program.
  • Preferably have at least one year of intensive and general care experience as a respiratory therapist.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with blood gas procurement and analysis.
  • Familiarity with department policies and protocols.
