About the position

The Respiratory Therapist (RRT) position at the University of Chicago Medicine involves providing respiratory care treatments and procedures for adult patients in a full-time night shift role. The therapist will work under the supervision of department leadership and physicians, focusing on patient assessment and implementing appropriate care protocols to maintain or improve cardiopulmonary status. This role is integral to the Respiratory Care Services department, which is dedicated to delivering high-quality, individualized care using advanced technology and established protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Administers supplemental oxygen and medical gas therapy as prescribed and documents procedures in the EPIC electronic medical record.
  • Administers medication delivery therapy, including bronchodilators and steroids, and documents procedures in real-time in the EPIC system.
  • Implements airway clearance techniques and bronchopulmonary hygiene procedures, documenting them appropriately in the EPIC system.
  • Initiates and maintains non-invasive ventilation procedures, assessing patient status and documenting procedures as required.
  • Manages mechanical ventilation, providing thorough patient assessments and documenting procedures accurately in the EPIC system.
  • Performs Arterial Blood Gas analysis and ensures quality control of ABG analyzers, reporting results in a timely manner.
  • Facilitates patient transport within the facility while ensuring oxygen delivery and mechanical ventilation are maintained.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an approved and accredited Respiratory Care Program (minimum two years duration).
  • Diploma or Certificate of Completion and Associate's Degree from an accredited academic body.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) certification from The National Board for Respiratory Care.
  • Licensed as a Respiratory Care Practitioner by the State of Illinois.
  • Basic Life Support Healthcare provider certification from the American Heart Association.
