About the position

The University of Chicago Medicine is seeking a full-time Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) to join the Pediatrics Team within the Respiratory Care Services department. This role involves providing specialized respiratory care to pediatric patients, ensuring high-quality individualized treatment through advanced technology and established protocols. The position is focused on delivering patient-centered care in a collaborative environment, with opportunities for professional growth and development.

Responsibilities

  • Administers supplemental oxygen and medical gas therapy as prescribed by physician orders or departmental protocols, documenting procedures in the EPIC electronic medical record.
  • Delivers intermittent and continuous medication delivery therapy, including bronchodilators and steroids, while accurately documenting in real-time.
  • Performs bronchopulmonary hygiene, suctioning, and airway care procedures, implementing airway clearance techniques as per physician orders or departmental guidelines.
  • Initiates and maintains non-invasive ventilation procedures, assessing patient status and equipment, and documenting procedures in the EPIC system.
  • Manages mechanical ventilation, providing thorough patient assessments and implementing weaning plans as per physician orders or departmental protocols.
  • Conducts Arterial Blood Gas analysis, troubleshooting analyzers and ensuring quality control, while reporting results accurately and timely.
  • Facilitates patient transport within the facility while ensuring oxygen delivery systems and mechanical ventilators are maintained.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an approved and accredited Respiratory Care Program (minimum two years duration).
  • Diploma or Certificate of Completion and Associate's Degree from an accredited academic body.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by The National Board for Respiratory Care.
  • Licensed by the State of Illinois as a Respiratory Care Practitioner.
  • Basic Life Support Healthcare provider certification (American Heart Association).
  • Effective communication and documentation skills, both verbal and written.
