About the position

The Retail General Manager (GM) at Ohio Valley Goodwill Industries is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the retail store, ensuring efficient production activities and effective customer service on the sales floor. The GM plays a crucial role in managing inventory, budgeting, and maintaining high standards of housekeeping and safety. This position requires strong leadership skills to define roles and responsibilities for staff, set performance expectations, and provide training and feedback to ensure operational success.

Responsibilities

  • Manage daily operations of the retail store including production activities and retail selling floor.
  • Oversee customer service, stocking, merchandising, inventory control, budgeting, and record keeping.
  • Ensure overall production efficiency, housekeeping standards, safety standards, and loss prevention.
  • Define roles, responsibilities, and requirements for direct reports and hold them accountable.
  • Set specific performance expectations and provide necessary training and feedback to staff.
  • Manage inventory levels of all merchandise lines and ensure a smooth flow of donations.
  • Maintain staffing levels while adhering to budgeted payroll and manage hiring and training of store employees.
  • Perform reporting requirements including surveys, production reports, and sales reports in a timely manner.
  • Review and analyze profit and loss statements to adjust store operations accordingly.
  • Create an atmosphere of exceptional customer service and resolve customer complaints.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; some college preferred.
  • Two to three years of previous retail progressive management experience supervising several departments and/or staff of 15 or more employees.
  • Minimum of five years' experience in retail or equivalent industry.
  • Experience in selecting, assessing, coaching, and developing associates in a retail environment.
  • Full Profit + Loss ownership experience.
  • Proficiency in setting and managing schedules for store staff.
  • Effective communication skills in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Math and computer skills required.
  • Broad knowledge of the thrift and resale industry.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills, with high integrity and respect for all individuals.

  • Experience in a non-profit retail environment.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including opening and closing shifts.
