About the position

As a Revenue Accounting Manager at OpenAI, you will play a crucial role in supporting the accounting close process and driving strategic initiatives aimed at streamlining this process. Your responsibilities will include collaborating with various teams such as StratFin, FP&A, GTM, and Finance Data to enhance revenue reporting processes, ensuring they are efficient and tailored to meet the evolving needs of stakeholders. This position is based in San Francisco, CA, and operates under a hybrid work model, requiring three days in the office each week. Additionally, the company offers relocation assistance for new employees. In this role, you will oversee critical accounting close processes, which encompass journal entries, account reconciliations, and flux analyses. Your focus will be on enhancing the efficiency, accuracy, and timeliness of the close process. You will leverage your strong analytical and SQL skills to investigate root cause revenue discrepancies, propose and implement solutions, and collaborate with relevant teams to ensure corrective actions are taken. Furthermore, you will be responsible for developing, maintaining, and documenting internal controls, as well as creating new controls as the company continues to grow and evolve. You will also need to understand both internal and external revenue reporting requirements, optimizing financial systems to provide improved visibility. Your role will involve preparing ad hoc revenue analyses as requested and responding to auditor queries. Additionally, you will assist in expanding the accounting team by participating in the recruitment and training of accounting contractors, ensuring the team is robust enough to support the company's growth.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee accounting close processes, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and flux analyses to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and timeliness of close.
  • Utilize analytical and SQL skills to investigate root cause revenue discrepancies and propose solutions.
  • Collaborate with relevant teams to ensure corrective actions are taken and work systematically to fix issues going forward.
  • Develop, maintain, and document internal controls and create new controls as the company expands.
  • Understand internal and external revenue reporting requirements and optimize financial systems for improved visibility.
  • Prepare ad hoc revenue analysis as requested and respond to auditor queries.
  • Assist in expanding the accounting team by participating in the recruitment and training of accounting contractors.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 3+ years of operational accounting in a fast-paced, high-growth environment, preferably in public or large pre-IPO companies.
  • CPA certification and in-depth understanding of ASC 606 revenue recognition standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to excel in dynamic environments, managing multiple tasks, priorities, and deadlines.
  • Strong collaboration skills to work effectively with Finance Data, Billing Operations, Deal Desk, and Product teams.
  • Solid business acumen and ability to analyze information from internal and cross-functional teams.
  • Advanced analytical and SQL skills, with experience working with large volumes of accounting data.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience managing relationships with external auditors.

Nice-to-haves

  • Proficiency with data analysis and business intelligence tools (e.g., Oracle NSAW, Tableau, Databricks).
  • Background in coordinating workflows with global teams.
  • Experience in Order to Cash (OTC) processes for SaaS and consumption-based businesses.
  • SOX-related experience.
