About the position

The Revenue Cycle Coordinator at Stony Brook Medicine will oversee the Patient Financial Services staff within the Hospital's Business Office, focusing on the timely and effective billing and collection of the Hospital's Accounts Receivable. This role involves collaboration with the Unit Supervisor to enhance workflows, train staff, and ensure high-quality work output. The Coordinator will serve as a subject matter expert, providing mentorship and support to staff while managing complex billing issues and claims resolution.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Patient Financial Services staff in the Hospital's Business Office.
  • Prepare and submit complex insurance claims, voids, and adjustments.
  • Investigate and resolve high dollar and complex claim issues.
  • Follow up on high dollar and complex rejected or denied claims.
  • Process complex appeals and assist in staff training.
  • Audit staff work and provide education on best practices.
  • Educate staff on payer contracts and billing compliance.
  • Act as a subject matter expert and primary point of escalation for staff questions.
  • Provide regular updates to the Unit Supervisor on unit status and trends.
  • Liaise with clinical, IT, and Revenue Cycle Departments as needed.
  • Support the Hospital/Payer Joint Operating Committee process.
  • Investigate and update complex COB issues accurately.
  • Assist in unit staffing, scheduling, and employee timesheet review.
  • Maintain unit productivity dashboards and assist in special projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree and at least 2 years of health care revenue cycle experience.
  • In lieu of a degree, at least 4 years of healthcare revenue cycle experience with a background in claims analysis, follow-up, and/or denials appeals and resolution.
  • Working knowledge of Medicare and NY Medicaid reimbursement methodologies.
  • Knowledge of hospital inpatient and outpatient billing requirements (UB-04, 837i).
  • Experience with CPT / HCPCs and ICD-10 codes.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with investigating and following up on rejected/denied insurance claims.
  • Experience billing complex hospital claims including Medicare Benefits Exhaust and Interim Billing.
  • Experience with Cerner Invision, Millennium, Soarian or RevElate Patient Accounting Systems.
  • Proficiency with an Acute Care Hospital Contract Management System.
  • Medical Coding Certification through AAPC and/or AHIMA.
  • Master's Degree.
