About the position

The Revenue Officer position within the Small Business Self Employed Division of the IRS is a critical role focused on the collection of delinquent taxes and securing delinquent returns from taxpayers. This position is designed for individuals who are adept at managing complex financial situations and possess strong investigative skills. As a Revenue Officer, you will be responsible for conducting interviews with taxpayers in various environments, including their business locations and residences, to gather information necessary for the collection process. You will also manage a caseload of delinquency cases, ensuring that all required actions are completed in a timely manner. This role requires a comprehensive understanding of tax laws and regulations, as well as the ability to counsel taxpayers on their obligations and assist them in developing plans to resolve their delinquencies. In addition to the core responsibilities of collecting taxes, the Revenue Officer may lead special programs or projects aimed at improving collection processes or addressing specific taxpayer issues. The position demands a high level of professionalism and the ability to handle potentially hostile interactions with taxpayers. You will be expected to apply a wide range of investigative techniques and analytical methods to assess financial statements and locate assets that can be used to satisfy tax liabilities. This role is essential in ensuring compliance with federal tax laws and providing necessary guidance to taxpayers to help them meet their obligations.

Responsibilities

  • Collect delinquent tax and secure delinquent returns from taxpayers who have not resolved their obligations.
  • Determine actions necessary to bring taxpayers into full compliance with tax laws.
  • Conduct interviews with taxpayers and their representatives in various environments as part of the investigative process.
  • Manage inventory of delinquency cases and complete required case actions in a timely manner.
  • Counsel taxpayers on their tax filing, depositing, and payment obligations, providing guidance on financial problems.

Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience at the GS-12 level in the Federal service, including experience collecting delinquent Federal taxes and securing delinquent returns.
  • Experience conducting investigations of alleged criminal violations of Federal tax statutes and making recommendations for prosecutions and civil penalties.
  • Knowledge of the Internal Revenue Code and related regulations pertaining to various types of taxes.
  • Experience applying accounting practices to analyze financial statements and locate distrainable assets.
  • Ability to effectively meet and deal with taxpayers and their representatives, including those who may be uncooperative.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with internal audits or administrative duties related to tax collection.
  • Familiarity with tax and business laws, regulations, and judicial processes.
