Auto-Owners Insurance, a top-rated insurance carrier, is seeking a motivated Underwriting professional to join our team. This position is challenging yet rewarding, as it plays a crucial role in helping individuals and businesses regain financial security after a loss. The Underwriting professional will perform and apply insurance coverage, rules, and guidelines to execute the underwriting decision-making process according to the company's underwriting philosophy. This role includes comprehensive training and development through the completion of the company's underwriter training program for the assigned line of insurance. The successful candidate will learn various insurance coverages and contracts, along with the company's philosophy and procedures, to make informed underwriting decisions. This involves reading, interpreting, and reacting to documents such as policies, manuals, forms, and endorsements to understand their meaning and use. The Underwriting professional will assemble information, develop opinions, and clearly express decisions using sound reasoning and judgment. Additionally, they will analyze loss experience, financial conditions, and physical characteristics of risks, acquiring a working knowledge of supporting sections of the underwriting department. Effective communication is key in this role, as the Underwriting professional will interact with independent agents and other associates through verbal and written means. Participation in and successful completion of the company’s underwriter training program is essential for this position, ensuring that the individual is well-equipped to handle the responsibilities of underwriting.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and apply insurance coverage, rules, and guidelines to execute the underwriting decision-making process.
  • Learn various insurance coverages and contracts along with company philosophy and procedures.
  • Read, interpret, and react to documents such as policies, manuals, forms, and endorsements.
  • Assemble information, develop opinions, and clearly express decisions using sound reasoning and judgment.
  • Analyze loss experience, financial conditions, and physical characteristics of risks.
  • Acquire a working knowledge of supporting sections of the underwriting department.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Strong commercial underwriting knowledge.
  • Ability to handle a large volume of work.
  • Detail-oriented, especially for large multi-location/state policies and longer lead times on quotes.
  • Good agency relationships and ability to have tough conversations.
  • Ability to organize data, multi-task, and make decisions independently.
  • Above average communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Ability to write reports and compose correspondence.
  • Ability to resolve complex issues.
  • Continually develop product knowledge through participation in approved educational programs.
