About the position

The Risk Manager at Northwest Texas Healthcare System is responsible for overseeing and managing risk management activities across the acute care facility, behavioral health unit, and off-site clinics. This role involves implementing the Corporate Risk Management TERM program, promoting a culture of safety and service excellence, and ensuring compliance with relevant standards. The Risk Manager will lead initiatives to enhance patient safety, manage claims, and provide education on risk reduction strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates leadership in departmental reports and patient safety initiatives.
  • Responds to departmental needs and prioritizes processes and activities.
  • Prepares claim files on potential and actual claims.
  • Reports potential risk or safety concerns to the Risk Director.
  • Assists with preparation of reports and data for the Patient Safety Council.
  • Manages patient safety and risk matters, tracking variance/event reports for trends.
  • Provides education to all departments on patient safety strategies and risk reduction.
  • Audits areas for compliance in risk reduction processes and strategies.
  • Identifies potential for risk avoidance through communication with clinical staff.
  • Coordinates and documents root cause analysis for adverse events.
  • Provides discovery and interrogatory documents for local counsel as needed for claims.
  • Assists local attorneys with preparation for depositions, mediation, and court proceedings.
  • Enters event and claims data into Midas and STARS Enterprise.
  • Communicates updates to Corporate Legal regarding open and potential claims.
  • Attends and contributes to required meetings related to patient safety and risk management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing or other Healthcare related field (minimum of 2 years of college required).
  • Minimum 5 years clinical experience.
  • Experience in Healthcare Risk Management or Quality preferred.
  • Interview skills and experience in incident investigation.
  • Demonstrates high level of organizational skills.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Knowledge of computer hardware and software applications.
  • Ability to perform statistical analysis on data collected via risk management reporting.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a leadership role within healthcare settings.
  • Familiarity with The Joint Commission leadership standards.
