About the position

The RN Acute - Operating Room position at UnityPoint Health involves providing comprehensive nursing care to surgical patients throughout all phases of perioperative care, including preoperative, intraoperative, post-anesthesia, and postoperative stages. The role requires working in a dynamic operating room environment that caters to a diverse patient population, from pediatric to geriatric, across various surgical specialties.

Responsibilities

  • Provides specialized perioperative care based on Standards of Care/Practice to patients of all ages undergoing surgical procedures.
  • Maintains direct responsibility for nursing care of assigned patients within the registered nurse scope of practice.
  • Assesses the perioperative patient's physiological and psychosocial status to formulate a nursing care plan.
  • Receives and processes physician orders accurately and timely, utilizing the read back process.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of medications and their correct administration, following medication administration rights and processes.
  • Sets up, operates, and monitors specialized and complex patient care equipment for managing pre-operative, intraoperative, and post-operative patients.
  • Assesses the needs of patients and families, providing appropriate teaching and referrals for continuity of care.
  • Develops an individual plan of care using a collaborative approach with the patient/family and healthcare team.
  • Completes documentation in the electronic health record to assure an accurate legal record of patient care.
  • Delivers high-quality care utilizing the nursing process while demonstrating knowledge and clinical skills of the perioperative specialty.
  • Utilizes a holistic approach appropriate to the age of the patients and families served in the assigned service area.
  • Delegates and provides direction for other healthcare team members within their scope of practice.
  • Utilizes critical thinking in developing nursing interventions while maintaining responsibility and accountability.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program; BSN degree preferred.
  • 6 months of hospital clinical experience or demonstrated clinical efficiency.
  • Previous operating room experience.
  • Current licensure in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in Iowa.
  • Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or obtain certification within three months from date of hire.
  • Current ACLS certification or completion within the first year of employment.
  • CNOR specialty certification preferred.
  • Valid driver's license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.

Nice-to-haves
