About the position
The RN Extern position is designed for nursing students to gain practical experience in a hospital setting. Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, the extern will assist with patient care tasks, maintain a safe environment, and may also perform clerical duties as needed. This role is part-time and operates on a PRN basis, allowing flexibility in scheduling while providing essential support to the nursing team.
Responsibilities
- Assist with patient care tasks as delegated by the RN, including activities of daily living (ADLs).
- Perform vital signs, accuchecks, and simple (non-sterile) dressing changes.
- Provide toileting assistance and transport patients to other departments.
- Maintain a safe and clean environment for patients.
- Answer phones, fax documents, and prepare patient charts.
- May operate as a Unit Secretary depending on unit needs.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program.
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- AHA BLS certification required.
- Complete clinical competencies required for assigned area before working off orientation.
