About the position

5 West is a 26-bed, newly renovated unit at Carilion Clinic that specializes in meeting the complex needs of the medical and/or surgical patient. Our patient population ranges from pneumonia and general medical conditions to minor surgical procedures and complex medical/psychosocial needs. A special focus of our team includes the complex issue of IV drug-related infections that require up to 6 weeks of medical care. This special team consists of a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Peer Recovery Specialists, Addiction Physicians, Psychiatric Technicians, Clinical Nurse Specialists, and many others who are passionate about helping in the recovery of patients who have often lost hope for a future life. Our patients have lovingly named our unit “The Hope Unit.” As a registered nurse, you are expected to consistently deliver the best in care and customer service and demonstrate respect, dignity, kindness, and empathy in each encounter with our patients, their families, visitors, and with each other. As part of the health care team, RNs assume primary accountability for nursing coordination and provision of individualized care for patients of all ages. The registered nurse also utilizes delegation and critical thinking skills to provide quality service through a team-oriented, collaborative approach to patient care. The RN's duties include, but may not be limited to the following: Age-specific admission and ongoing assessments are completed, documented, and used to develop a plan of care. Collaborates with members of the health care team/patient/family to develop, implement, and evaluate an age-specific interdisciplinary plan of care. Revises plan according to changes in patient status. Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates patient care in order to achieve optimum patient outcomes for patients of all ages as appropriate to service area. Treatments and medications for patients of all ages are accurately administered and documented utilizing automated computer systems, including electronic medical records.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver individualized patient care and coordinate nursing activities for patients of all ages.
  • Conduct age-specific admission and ongoing assessments, documenting findings to develop a plan of care.
  • Collaborate with healthcare team members, patients, and families to create and evaluate an interdisciplinary plan of care.
  • Revise care plans based on changes in patient status and needs.
  • Administer treatments and medications accurately, documenting them in electronic medical records (EPIC).
  • Utilize critical thinking and delegation skills to ensure quality patient care.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing or an approved program eligible for VA licensure exam.
  • Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in Virginia or eligible to obtain Virginia RN licensure.
  • Obtain CPR certification, and as needed ACLS, PALS, NRP certifications.
  • Computer skills required for electronic medical record (EPIC).
  • Successfully complete orientation and competency requirements.
