About the position

Discover Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) is located in Nashville, Tennessee, and operates at a global crossroads of teaching, discovery, and patient care. VUMC is a community of diverse individuals who come to work each day with the simple aim of changing the world. It is a place where your expertise will be valued, your knowledge expanded, and your abilities challenged. Vanderbilt Health recognizes that diversity is essential for excellence and innovation. We are committed to an inclusive environment where everyone has the chance to thrive and where your diversity of culture, thinking, learning, and leading is sought and celebrated. It is a place where employees know they are part of something that is bigger than themselves, take exceptional pride in their work, and never settle for what was good enough yesterday. Vanderbilt's mission is to advance health and wellness through preeminent programs in patient care, education, and research. In the Labor and Delivery unit, the role involves planning, organizing, and administering patient care within the scope of training and expertise. This includes collaborating with other professional disciplines to ensure effective and efficient patient care delivery and achievement of desired patient outcomes. The position operates in conjunction with the objectives and policies of the hospital and the Nurse Practice Act of the State of Tennessee. The hours for this position are PRN, night shift (7p-7a), with a minimum commitment of 4 shifts in a 6-week schedule, including 1 major and 1 minor holiday a year. The Women's Services unit includes labor and delivery, postpartum, newborn nursery, and a Level II NICU, located on the second floor of Vanderbilt Tullahoma-Harton Hospital, which is a 16-bed unit. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:1 on L&D, 1:2 for stable NICU patients, and 1:5 for postpartum care/newborns. The environment on our unit is fast-paced and dynamic. As a team, we provide high-quality and compassionate care. We care for adult obstetrical patients and newborns as they transition to extrauterine life. Occasionally, we care for patients undergoing gynecological procedures. Our patients are unique because we support them through life-changing events. Our nurses provide respectful maternity care that honors each birth experience while ensuring a healthy delivery. We also get to be involved as mother and baby transition into the postpartum period. Our expert newborn nursing care impacts the entire lifespan of each neonate. One of the perks of working on our unit is that we have a strong team that works well together. Our nurses are successful because they are knowledgeable, have critical thinking skills, and aim to provide exceptional care in a rapidly changing environment. We orient new nurses to our unit by allowing a lengthy 12-16 week orientation where they learn all specialties within the unit. We encourage professional growth, and if your career goal is to specialize in the care of obstetrical or newborn patients, the VTHH Women's Center can help with this by providing clinical experiences in both women's health and neonatology.
