The New Graduate RN position at UNC Hospitals is designed for recent nursing graduates or those in their final semester of nursing school. This role is situated within the GI Surgery & Surgical Oncology Acute Care Unit, known as 6 Memorial, where nurses will engage in a dynamic and supportive environment. The position requires a commitment of 36 hours per week, with a rotation that includes day, night, and weekend shifts, allowing for flexible self-scheduling. The successful candidate will be expected to have their RN license prior to the first day of employment, ensuring they are ready to provide competent clinical nursing care consistent with professional standards. As part of the Surgical Oncology Division, which is affiliated with the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, the nursing team will work alongside nationally renowned physician leaders who specialize in improving care for patients with colorectal, GI, and endocrine malignancies. The unit is recognized as a Bariatric Center for Excellence, and nurses will have the opportunity to work within the full scope of their practice in a multidisciplinary setting. The patient population will require close post-operative observation and care, including remote cardiac telemetry, early mobilization, pulmonary hygiene, and extensive physical therapies. Nurses will also be responsible for IV care, central line/PICC line management, administration of TPN, anticoagulation, oxygen therapy, pain management, and blood product administration, among other duties. New Graduate Nurses will participate in the UNC Medical Center Residency Program, a yearlong initiative that supports the transition from academia to practice. This program is designed to provide mentored clinical relationships that foster professional development. The role emphasizes the importance of education, evaluation of care, implementation of nursing processes, leadership, patient assessment, planning, and research, all aimed at delivering high-quality patient care in a hospital setting.
