About the position

The Registered Nurse - Oncology plays a crucial role in providing comprehensive care to patients with cancer and their families. This position involves assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to ensure quality treatment. The RN may work in Medical Oncology, administering chemotherapy and non-chemotherapy treatments, or in Radiation Oncology, supporting patients undergoing radiation treatments. The role requires emotional support for patients and families, education, and resource referral, adhering to Oncology Nursing Society guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for oncology patients.
  • Administer chemotherapy and non-chemotherapy treatments in Medical Oncology.
  • Support patients undergoing radiation treatments in Radiation Oncology.
  • Provide emotional support to patients and their families.
  • Collaborate with physicians, pharmacy, and clinic personnel to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Educate patients and families about treatment plans and resources available.
  • Perform Apheresis procedures and/or Cellular Therapy product collections as needed.
  • Maintain compliance with Oncology Nursing Society guidelines.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current State of Wisconsin Registered Nurse License or Nurse Compact License.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within three months of hire.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification within one year of hire for those performing conscious sedation.
  • Membership in the National Oncology Nursing Society or Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses (APHON) within three months of hire/transfer into position.
  • Completion of Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate Course within one year of hire/transfer for Medical Oncology RNs performing treatments/infusions.
  • Obtain a minimum of 12 CEUs annually in oncology/hematology from hire and Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) within three and a half years of hire/transfer for Medical Oncology RNs.
  • Completion of Radiation Therapy Certificate course within two years of hire/transfer for Radiation Oncology RNs.

Nice-to-haves

  • A minimum of two years' nursing experience, preferably in oncology.
  • Experience in acute care settings or varied clinical experiences if no oncology experience.
