About the position

The RN Navigator Oncology Nurse Navigators (ONNs) will provide comprehensive care coordination for GI medical oncology patients in the outpatient Cancer Clinic at the University of Arizona Cancer Center. This role focuses on assisting patients through their healthcare journey by offering education, symptom management, and support while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to ensure optimal patient outcomes. The position is full-time, primarily during the day, with some flexibility in hours and the possibility of remote work based on patient and team needs.

Responsibilities

  • Assess the patient's plan of care and develop, implement, monitor, and document the utilization of resources and progress of the patient through their care.
  • Evaluate the medical necessity and appropriateness of care, optimizing patient outcomes, and serve as a liaison for referring physicians.
  • Assist the patient/family through diagnostic services, treatment, and care, coordinating disease care using an interdisciplinary holistic approach.
  • Ensure that the patient and family understand the diagnostic processes, care strategy, and recommended actions, providing appropriate information in coordination with healthcare providers.
  • Evaluate patient's functional abilities and limitations, establishing treatment goals and implementing a plan of care to achieve those goals.
  • Support the patient and family during difficult decision-making periods, including coordination of end-of-life care and providing emotional support.
  • Participate in process improvement activities to achieve optimal clinical, financial, operational, and satisfaction outcomes.
  • Establish and promote collaborative relationships with physicians, payers, and other healthcare team members, communicating pertinent information to fulfill utilization and regulatory requirements.
  • Work independently with the freedom to determine how to best accomplish functions within established procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing or related field.
  • Current RN licensure in the state of practice.
  • BLS certification required.
  • 5 years of clinical experience in a relevant specialty area.
  • Excellent organizational skills and clinical knowledge regarding specialty care services and care coordination.
  • Effective communication and writing skills, good time management skills, and knowledge of word processing and database software applications.
  • Ability to teach clinical and non-clinical personnel regarding care and diagnostic services.
  • Understanding of process improvement.

Nice-to-haves

  • Current certification in specialty area preferred.
  • Prior Case Management experience preferred.
  • Experience with mild traumatic brain injury treatment(s) and outreach in the community preferred.
