The Registered Nurse (RN) in Orthopedics at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission plays a crucial role in providing comprehensive care to patients within the orthopedic unit. The RN is responsible for coordinating patient care, which includes direct patient interactions, assessments, and the implementation of care plans tailored to meet the unique needs of each patient. The RN will utilize the nursing process—assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation—to ensure optimal patient outcomes and advocate for the patients' needs throughout their care journey. In this role, the RN will demonstrate leadership and management skills, fostering a culture of accountability and professional growth. The RN is expected to advance their skills from novice to expert, becoming an evidence-based scholar in nursing practices. This commitment to professional development is essential for providing the highest standard of care and for serving as a role model for the mission, vision, and values of Shawnee Mission Health. The RN will work within the parameters of the Kansas Nurse Practice Act and adhere to all regulatory standards, policies, and procedures. The RN will also be involved in various activities that promote patient safety and effective communication within the healthcare team. This includes participating in bedside shift reports, safety huddles, and multidisciplinary patient rounds. The RN will prioritize nursing interventions based on patient needs and available resources, ensuring that all aspects of patient care are addressed. Additionally, the RN will engage in patient education and discharge planning to facilitate optimal recovery and health outcomes for patients.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the efforts of the multidisciplinary care team for patients within the RN's scope of responsibility.
  • Provide direct patient care and collaborate with patients, families, peers, physicians, and other healthcare team members.
  • Utilize the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation) to maintain and improve patient outcomes.
  • Demonstrate leadership and management skills while committing to professional accountability and growth.
  • Assure patient safety by adhering to established policies and procedures and utilizing patient safety resources.
  • Implement a plan of care according to identified physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs.
  • Prioritize nursing interventions based on patient needs and unit activities.
  • Participate in bedside shift report, safety huddles, multidisciplinary patient rounds, and hourly rounding.
  • Provide patient teaching and discharge planning to promote optimal patient outcomes.

Requirements

  • Kansas Registered Nurse License
  • BCLS obtained through the American Heart Association
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or obtained within 4 years of employment
