About the position

The RN PACU position at Virginia Mason Franciscan Health involves providing high-quality post-anesthesia care to surgical and procedural patients in a fast-paced, teamwork-focused environment. The role requires flexibility between Preoperative and PACU areas, ensuring patient readiness for surgery and monitoring post-anesthesia recovery. The PACU team is dedicated to delivering compassionate care while managing patient complications and ensuring safety and comfort during recovery.

Responsibilities

  • Provide Preoperative, Phase 1, and Phase 2 post-anesthesia care for surgical and procedural patients.
  • Monitor patients' oxygenation, respiratory status, circulation, level of consciousness, and temperature post-anesthesia.
  • Assess, plan, intervene, and evaluate post-anesthesia care for patients of all ages and acuity levels.
  • Manage and evaluate post-anesthesia and postoperative complications, including pain and nausea.
  • Determine patient readiness for discharge from PACU based on scoring criteria.
  • Work flexibly between Preop and PACU areas based on staffing and caseloads.

Requirements

  • Current and valid Washington State Registered Nurse License.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • ACLS certification required within 60 days of hire.
  • PALS certification required within 60 days of hire.
  • At least 2 years of recent Progressive Care/Intermediate Care/Step-Down Unit experience may be considered for training.

Nice-to-haves

  • National certification in area of specialty including CCRN, CPAN, or CAPA.
  • 1-2 years of recent inpatient PACU experience within the last 3 years.
  • Experience with all phases of post-anesthesia care including Preop, Phase 1, and Phase 2.
  • Previous experience in Charge and Preceptor roles.
  • Experience with starting IVs and managing airway emergencies.
