About the position

The RN Unit Manager is responsible for overseeing the delivery of quality nursing care to residents in a skilled nursing facility. This role involves managing nursing staff, ensuring compliance with regulations, and developing care plans based on residents' needs. The Unit Manager plays a critical role in maintaining high standards of care and facilitating effective communication among healthcare team members.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors facility clinical systems to facilitate quality resident care.
  • Delivers basic nursing care to residents according to care plans.
  • Directs and develops RNs, LPNs, and CNAs to ensure high-quality care.
  • Conducts ongoing assessments of residents and revises care plans as needed.
  • Works with ADON and DON to resolve grievances related to resident care.
  • Documents interventions and resident education efforts accurately and timely.
  • Conducts rounds to assess resident conditions and clinical practices.
  • Documents nursing care notes in resident charts promptly.
  • Administers medications and IV duties as per care plans.
  • Monitors resident progress and suggests treatment plan adjustments.
  • Observes resident behavior and reports findings to nursing supervisors.
  • Completes incident reports for changes in resident conditions.
  • Monitors residents' skin for pressure sore risks.
  • Handles various nursing administrative duties.
  • Places medication orders with pharmacies as needed.
  • Takes inventory of narcotics and monitors emergency kits.
  • Monitors emotional and physical conditions of residents.
  • Performs shift change reports with previous shift nurses.
  • Understands procedures for admission, transfer, and discharge of residents.
  • Assists in recruitment and orientation of nursing staff.
  • Monitors performance of nursing staff and provides corrective action.
  • Communicates guidelines to nursing staff and residents.
  • Supervises timely responses to call lights and assists as needed.
  • Provides on-the-job training for new nursing staff.
  • Promotes a team environment through communication and recognition.
  • Monitors staff schedule adherence for breaks and shifts.
  • Monitors meal trays to ensure proper diets are served.
  • Participates in development and delivery of in-service training programs.
  • Assists in communicating new admissions to nursing staff.
  • Provides direct nursing care as necessary.
  • Promotes continuity of care with other departments.
  • Participates in discharge planning processes.
  • Actively participates in state or federal survey processes.
  • Assists in safety in-services for nursing staff regarding infection control.

Requirements

  • RN degree from an accredited college or nursing school.
  • Current RN licensure within the state of practice.
  • CPR certification required.
  • 1 to 3 years of nursing supervisor experience in a long-term care or healthcare setting.
  • Geriatrics experience preferred.

Nice-to-haves
