About the position

The RN - Vascular Access position at Memorial Healthcare System involves providing specialized vascular access care to patients, including the placement of intravenous (IV) lines and peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC). The role emphasizes collaboration with nursing staff and physicians, patient education, and maintaining high standards of patient care in a compassionate environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assembles medical equipment and supplies for procedures and restocks supplies.
  • Works with staff nurses, physicians, case managers, and other team members to ensure early assessment for vascular access device (VAD) selection and implementation.
  • Troubleshoots difficult complications of VADs or assists staff in troubleshooting.
  • Provides vascular access nursing care including peripheral IV and PICC line insertion, placement, monitoring, and dressing changes.
  • Educates patients and families on vascular access procedures, documents teaching in the Electronic Health Record, and notifies RN or physician of any patient/family concerns.
  • Assesses all body systems for absence of blood borne infections, surgical site infections, and skin integrity to prevent breakdown.
  • Communicates patient's progress, critical findings, and changes in condition to the physician or involved disciplines regarding IV therapy complications and procedures.
  • Completes the handoff process at shift change, providing patient information and communicating pending IVs, PICC line insertions, and dressing changes.
  • Conducts prevention rounding and follows up on identified concerns promptly.
  • De-clots VADs or assists staff as a resource in de-clotting.
  • Provides staff education on care and management and complication management.
  • Performs reassessments as per policy when there is a change in the plan of care or when an intervention is performed.
  • Places difficult peripheral IVs with or without ultrasound as needed.

Requirements

  • Associates degree in Nursing (Required)
  • ACLS Certification (AHA)
  • BLS Certification (AHA)
  • NRP Certification (AAP)
  • PALS Certification (AHA)
  • Registered Nurse License (State of Florida)
  • Two years nursing experience in an acute care hospital setting required
  • Experience inserting PICC lines preferred
  • Vascular RN Certification preferred
  • BSN preferred
