About the position

The Robot Design Engineer, also known as The Innovation Architect, is responsible for leading the mechanical design, functionality, and aesthetics of advanced robotic systems. This role involves collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to create robots that meet specific operational goals across various sectors, including manufacturing, healthcare, exploration, and consumer applications. The engineer will utilize their expertise in design and engineering to ensure the robots are reliable, functional, and visually appealing, performing effectively in diverse environments.

Responsibilities

  • Conceptualize, design, and prototype robotic bodies and mechanisms focusing on structural integrity, aesthetics, and functionality.
  • Design mechanical parts, joints, and assemblies that support movement and operation, optimizing for durability and efficiency.
  • Develop kinematic and dynamic models for robot movement, stability, and environmental interaction, collaborating with control engineers.
  • Lead the prototyping phase to test design feasibility, functionality, and durability, analyzing results for improvements.
  • Collaborate with electrical engineers to integrate sensors, actuators, and other hardware components into the robotic structure.
  • Utilize CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) to create detailed design drawings and simulations, ensuring accuracy.
  • Maintain thorough documentation of design processes and prepare technical reports to support development and future modifications.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in mechanical design principles, including kinematics, dynamics, and materials science as they apply to robotics.
  • Strong skills in CAD tools like SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or CATIA, and experience with simulation software for mechanical performance analysis.
  • Experience with prototyping techniques and familiarity with fabrication methods such as 3D printing and CNC machining.
  • Familiarity with servo motors, actuators, and motion-control components and their integration into mechanical systems.
  • Ability to analyze test data, troubleshoot design issues, and make iterative improvements.

Nice-to-haves

  • Relevant certifications or coursework in robotics, automation, or mechanical design.
  • Experience working with robotic simulation environments or motion planning tools.
